Skin allergies

Skin allergies are generally defined as a reactions which are caused by substances that come in contact with the skin.

There are various types of Skin Allergies:

  • Contact dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Hives

(A) Contact dermatitis chiefly develops contact with something a person is allergic to. Hence, the reaction which occurs causes redness and swelling. There may also be burning sensation. There may be stinging, itching or formation of blisters noted. Such type of reaction are commonly due to the use of skin products. If is commonly seen and body. The skin products which lead to such reactions are as follow:

Hair Dyes and permanent solutions.

Metals such as nickel

Fragrances in perfumes

Preservatives and household products

Latex (Rubber)

Bath powders

Tape and

Nowadays, reaction to latex is seen more commonly. Latex is found in balloons rubber bands, condoms, elastic bands, bathing suits, underwear, waist hands and rubber toys. The reactions can result in contact dermatitis, asthma or anaphflactic shock.

(B) Eczema: It is a general term for any type of dermatitis or inflammation of the skin. In this case, the skin. In this case, the skin may feel dry and itchy. It may flake, scale or look red. Itchy rashes and weeping blisters may appear

Eczema can be hard to treat. The best treatment for eczema is prevention, that is the person should avoid substances that cause dermatitis, extreme heat or cold and stress. They should take good care of their skin. They must use good moisturizing lotions that contains petroleum

Eczema -tic patient should not rub-dry, itching skin. Scratching can lead to open areas and chance for infection. Person should also keep their home cool and add moisture. If a flare-up occurs, then he/she should bathe in cool to lukewarm water or use cool, wet compresses to relieve the itch.

(c) Hives: They are red, itchy raised areas on the skin. There are two types of hives that is acute and chronic. Acute hives arise quickly and can last up to 6 weeks. They may appear in groups that fade in groups that fade as other groups develop.

Hives around the eyes, lips or genital swell a great deal. They can be alarming, but usually go away within 24 hours. The causes of acute hives are foods, medicines, insect bites, etc. The chronic hives are less common. They last more than 6 weeks and the cause is often unknown.

Treatment of Skin Allergies

There is no permanent cure for skin reactions. Good use of moisturizing lotion should be made. Person should also shift to non-allergic and fragrance free products. Drugs such as antihistamines that is Benadryl or cortisone may be used. Scratching should be avoided to prevent infection.
