Orthodontic dentistry

The world orthodontics is derived from the greek word. The word orthodontics means right on correcting of the tooth. Orthodontics can be defined as the study of growth and development of the masticatory apparatus an the prevention and treatment of abnormalities of this for the study

Orthodontics, gave a fuller but more cumbersome definition which is a such “Orthodontics includes the study of the growth and development of the jaws and face particularly, and the body generally, as influencing the position of the teeth, the study of action and reaction of internal and external and external influences on the prevention and correction prevention and of arrested and perverted development.

It has been noticed that stress has been laid upon two points. First, that orthodontics embraces general development of the body and secondly that is a study.

History of orthodontic dentistry

Orthodontics is both an art and a science. Because part of the orthodontist’s concern is with aesthetics sense as is needed for the construction of artificial dentures. Only since the start of 20 th century, hasy it has been possible to classify orthodontics as a science.

Up to latter part of the 19 th century, it was understood merely as the means whereby irregular teeth could be straightened. Little significance was attached to the mutual relation of the two arches, and the functional movements of the mandible were largely ignored.

It was not until Edward Angel published his classification of irregularities of the teeth in 1899 that orthodotics made any progress as a science. This is perhaps the most important single even in the history of orthodontics. More recently, howev4r great progress has been made towards a better understanding of the problem of malocclusion and in the methods of treatment.

Aims of orthodontic dentistry

All branches of dentistry have one common aim, the establishment of as good an occlusion as possible, not only in functional but also in the esthetic sense.

Hence, the main aim of orthodentics is to achieve a functional and aesthetically harmonious occlusion by altering permanently the positions of the natural teeth.

This is accomplished by the careful stimulation of alveolar bone tissue of alter its shape and to support the teeth in a more favourable position. Naturally such tooth movements can only be carried out with extreme care and many factors have to be considered.

Furthermore, such treatment cannot be carried out rapidly and many months or even years may elapse before the orthodontist can admire his results. It is because of this fact, the orthodontics seems to be an unattractive study.

Nevertheless, there are a few more rewarding aspects of dentistry than to alter an unsightly and ill functioning occlusion to one which is more harmonious and effective. Hence, it may be said orthodontics seeks (i) To intercept departures from normal development of the masticatory organs. (ii) When necessary, to restore as early as possible conditions under which normal development may be resumed.
