Blackheads
Blackheads are the flat, darkened spots that form when pores becomes clogged with a mixture of sebum (or oil) and dead skin cells. Blackheads are also known as Open comedones. The dark color of the blackheads is caused by the densely packed skin cells which take on a dark color.
General appearance of blackheads
Blackheads are most prevalent in the T-zone, that is the area across the forehead and down the nose and chin, where the rebaceous glands are extremely active. But the blackheads can appear anywhere on the face. Blackheads can turn in full blown acne lesions of they become inflamed. Moreover, if the get exposed to bacteria then also they can become extensive lesions.
Treatment of blackheads:
Unfortunately, blackheads are very hard to prevent, because of the skin’s constant sebum production and cell turnover. Washing with a salicylic acid cleanser will temporarily remove pore- clogging debris and surface oil. Alpha-hydroxy acids are also a good first line of defence.
They gently exfoliate skin to prevent cells from building up and clogging pores. Pore strips are another good temporary solution because they help dislodge debris but they also have some drawbacks. Ore strips does not prevent further blackheads from forming and their adhesive can irritate sensitive skin.
Aseries of glycolic peels can also help but they are not recommended if a person is using retinoid because it may irritate the skin. A peel generally quickly slough off dead skin cells while removing some of the debris from the pores.
Five or six peels are usually recommended but the result is usually seen after the second peel. There is also a use of metal instrument with a small round opening on the end to remove individual blackheads.
